Thought I'd throw up a post in here to see if: A.) anyone here is even old enough to remember the movie & B.) if it influenced anyone's decision to work with computers for a living. Before anyone whines that it presented an absolute farcical depiction of hacking, there aren't any Hollywood movies that ever have, at least none that come to my mind. IMHO, what hackers actually *do* would be pretty dern boring, in the scope of a 2-hour movie; it'd take three times that long to portray it in a manner that a general audience could even understand. At any rate, I thought it's going to be cool to watch the thing on the big screen again, and check out the (now) antique gear that they used in the movie.

Hi, I would appreciate any advice on this.

I want to install Linux on a Pentium III 600Mhz computer with 320MB of Ram (2nd Hard drive, SCSI). My research suggests Debian. I'm no administrator but I wrote software professionally for over ten years. I'd prefer something easy for a newbie just to get my feet wet. I know the basics of operating in a Unix environment.

Again, thanks for your help.

I have an issue when I force a stop of a debugging session of my application in KDevelop. The debugging session fails to be killed and removed from the process list. I have to go to the process list and kill it by hand to get the process to end. The process is running fine at the point I manually stop the debugging session in KDevelop.

Anyone else seen this behavior? Or have any advice to why this might be happening? Thanks. :)

Vista and Ubuntu

Okay, two interesting rumors for the hamster wheels to churn on:

1) Vista requires all drivers to be authenticated by Microsoft, essentially breaking all the beautiful hardware support that has been developed on the windows platform over the years. Is anyone running Vista with older, more esoteric hardware? Is this true?

2) Dell has been releasing computers with the option of Ubuntu instead of windows. One side effect, in my opinion, has been better hardware support for my dell, even though it's an older model. Two words: winmodem driver. Even without the Dell investment, these people have been making huge strides in hardware support. Over the two years that I've been running Ubuntu, they keep adding support and making things more seamless. What's driving this acceleration in development? It seems like most of the distros are finally coming into their own as full fledged operating systems with out of the box functionality.

Ubuntu Installation

any ideas as to the best place to go for advice on ubuntu installation? I'm wanting to migrate to Linux, but a fair amount of my productivity will depend on Windows while I get used to it. I tried installing Ubuntu before (as a dual OS set up) with disastrous effects... First, the OS harddrive was partitioned, but no Ubuntu installed (actually the disasters occured when I tried to correct the damage :-)

I don't know if the problem was that I have my OS on one harddrive and my data on another, which meant I got confused on the instructions when the Ubuntu disc was taking me through the partitioning stages? Having lost a chunk of data (yes, I did have verified backups... bloody external hard drive corrupted just when I didn't need it to :-( I am somewhat anxious about trying again

I know it can be done, I did it on my laptop !?!

Buying a new laptop without an OS

I am thinking of buying a basic laptop. I do not need anything high-end-- no need for graphic editing, games, etc. I am looking for a new, reliable machine.

As I shop around, I see many low-end, cheap laptops in the $600-1000 range-- for a 1.4Ghz/256MB/40GB. Many of these are well rated by various magazines & websites.

However, all of these laptops come with Windows pre-installed. From what I understand, a license for Windows XP typically adds $200 to the cost of a computer.

I am familiar with many of the Linux Laptop vendors-- but ironically many of those laptops are too expensive for me. The prices for http://www.linuxcertified.com & http://www.emperorlinux.com/systemmatrix/?ordercol=emp_price&ordertype=asc start at $1200 or so. Many other vendors only ship refurbished laptops, and I prefer to buy something new.

Does anyone have any resources for buying a laptop without an OS pre-installed?

(I realize that installing Linux on a laptop is not always easy, but I have done it before, and I can do it again.)

localhost and primary dns issues

HELP!

I'm a comparative newbie... I rent a dedicated server off fasthosts.co.uk running a standard LAMP system, but when I set it up, I set it up with the wrong domain name as the first domain... I then changed the dns settings so that domains on the server have the dns ns1.newdomain.com and ns2.newdomain.com... however, localhost is still olddomain.com, so when postfix issues a HELO it does so with olddomain.com

This hasn't caused a problem, but I'm now trying to set SPF records for the mail servers, and I'm pretty sure the problem I'm having stems from that issue (the reason being that I have another server with same set up, but the dns and local host are the same and I was able to make the changes to the BIND DNS files absolutely fine and have the SPF verification checkout fine)

HOW can I reset the localhost? to match the primary domain? ... I've attempted several changes so far to no avail (though I haven't killed the server :-)
1. changed etc/hosts
2. placed newdomain.com before olddomain.com in the named.conf file
3. edited the etc/postfix/main.cf

Any ideas, short of full backup and restarting? Unfortunately, the server is live with stuff that is important to me

Adam (with fingers crossed)

can you be on call for this server and make some easy cash?

heya,

i'm the server admin for this site that's running really smooth. part of my contract is that i'm on call in case anything goes wrong. it's a smooth running super over-powered box, fresh install (fedora core 4 with cpanel), and the chances of something going wrong are extremely unlikely.

if a service fails, and that hasn't happened yet, cpanel will restart the service. but anyhow, as part of the contract, i need someone to be on call at all times, and i'm going away this June 21 - 25th. The server is both internally and externally monitored, and if a service goes down, it SMS's my cellphone with the message right away. If I can forward that to you, that's all that would be required.

The requirement is that you have a cell on you at all times for the time that I'm gone. You must also be able to respond to emergency calls from the client (again, not likely).

I figure like $50 to cover those days is good. Basically you just make $50 for giving me your cellphone number and agreeing to cover it. If something does happen to go wrong, you'll have SSH to the server and you can go fix er up at your hourly wage (let me know what it is).

I've really put this off to way too late... so I'm hoping it works out. Otherwise, if anyone can recommend some such service, I'd be thankful. I don't want to pay for a generic reboot service cuz that wouldn't make me feel comfortable enough to go out partying for 5 days.

Thanks bloods,

Shiraz

Microsoft charges patent infringements against Linux and others

Microsoft charges patent infringements
Action against Linux, other open-source software may be difficult, experts say

Microsoft claims that free and open-source software violates 235 of its patents, according to a published report.

In an interview with Fortune magazine, Microsoft top lawyer Brad Smith alleges that the Linux kernel violates 42 Microsoft patents, while its user interface and other design elements infringe on a further 65. OpenOffice.org is accused of infringing 45, along with 83 more in other free and open-source programs, according to Fortune.

It is not entirely clear how Microsoft might proceed in enforcing these patents, but the company has been encouraging large tech companies that depend on Linux to sign patent deals, starting with its controversial pact with Novell in November.

Microsoft has also cited Linux protection playing a role in recent patent swap deals with Samsung and Fuji Xerox. Microsoft has also had discussions but not reached a deal with Red Hat, as noted in the Fortune article.

I've written a Perl script that when given a list of Podcast feeds it will download to your PC any new ones and then when your IPOD is next mounted it will synchronise them to your IPOD in an "Unheard" playlist.

See what you think, any help in testing, suggesting improvements and coding will be gratefully received:

Rank beginner Adobe pdf driver question

I bow before the linux gods and goddesses. I'm an old relic who use to fumble through cpm, dos, windoze and now Mac 9.1 and Tiger. I'm esentially an end user who gets hoodwinked into making things work.

Here's my question. At my new job, I'm working on wdoze XP, on a network, and a portal to a linux server. All of the Office software is kinda current, but the linux and windoz accounting software is super old. All I want to do is have the ability to print to pdf's so I don't have to get up and down, go to the printer and then stick the stuff in a copier that scans and makes a pdf. I'm semi-disabled, and by the time I get up and down, I want to pass out.

Would buying Adobe Acrobat Professional or Standard (it's up to 8 now) solve my problems? Their literature and website says that they can make a pdf from anything that prints. Is this true? Does the Adobe pdf become a virtual print driver?

I have all of this stuff on my Mac Powerbook, Adobe professional and all the latest software, and everything works seamlessly, but I don't quite understand the process. Am I correct, or am I on drugs?

Anyone who helps will be sent a big boatload of good mojo.
Non-Profit Org to Commission Programmer[s] for OpenSource Freeware

Non-Profit Org to Commission Programmer[s] for OpenSource Freeware

Reply to: AINPO@care2.com

We are seeking windows/apple/Linux/Pocket PC capable compilers and open source publishers (C++, Perl, python?), and ANY Artificial Intelligence, Random Number Generation,or bot implementation specialists. Decompiler capable folks welcome as well.
This Project will pay from a Small non-profit grant/stipend and will be distributed Copyleft/open source.

Part of the interface would mimic the NYSE/NASDAQ/etc boards with Glyphic/Iconic
representations of Goods (ex. bag of rice/spirulina/well pump/shovel/automobile bus part VIA Original FONTS LIBRARY) in surplus or demand for local/international barter / donation. IP Telephony would allow for conference calling(virtual PBX) or bandwidth-quota controlled 1 on 1 telephony that could occur on a 28.8k landline successfully.

This program will need:
-Full duplex bandwidth p2p access similar to bit torrent infrastructure
-IP telephony (capable of 28k modem success, primarily for 48k and better-OGG compression?)
-ability to view cad files & pdf
-*generic voice command (simple short syllable recognition that wouldnt require vocal mapping)
-skinnable GUI
-Media player unit
-alternative to gps for satellite positioning interface
-ability to induct volunteered computers for shared-load data processing via network
-chat/bulletin capable with realtime image conveyance(EX. drawing/tutoring software)
-(GRAMMER SENSITIVE)LANGUAGE TRANSLATION VIA TEXT WOULD BE AWESOME
-database inc. almanacs, smog counts etc (see bots)
-Self Contained to a disk?
-Spyware immune
-BBS, webcam, Ham, shortwave integration-(upgrades)

Most of the code for these functions is available open source already.
This Non-Profit Org is seeking compiled and open source versions of a program to facilitate organized bartering/communications amongst (registered?):

WWOOF participants
Intentional Communities
User groups
Professional Travelers
International Communities
Shelters
Refugee Camps
Sudents
Senior Citizens
Holistic practitioners
Independant Media
Community Gardens
Anyone & Everyone

Anyone with sufficient skills can collaborate with us to design this.
Our coffers are small but the job pays. You will be collaborating with a Graphic designer and Digital audio producer. This product will give credit to the designers but be -Copyleft- and opensource.

We are a non-profit organization preparing for 501c3 status and you can see our under construction website at the link below.
Click the icon on the left.

I was blocked access to the internet from my favorite coffee shop recently. You're not going to believe why... I was targeted because I was using Ubuntu Linux. Poor guy, didn't realize I am a net admin, too. So, far nothing more fancy than MAC spoofing got me back in. I'm hoping it doesn't have to go further.

Funniest thing: Told a friend of mine who's also a regular coffee shop customer and linux net admin from the local community collge (and know WAAAAY more than me.) First thing he says to me, 'Shouldn't be too hard to change his password.' I love that guy.

Anyone else had problems like this on "public networks"? It's a good practice to mask or spoof your MAC address anyway. I can gather/steal lists of 'em from around me and spoof them back. Currently using a random generated via SpoofMAC (on windoze platform-long story) but be aware that even so called "public access" or "free" internet offered by a private business can legally be monitored WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT. You can legally be blocked for whatever reason the net admin takes on a whim, again, LEGALLY. But our legal defense against this is to do what we can to to protect our private information.

Hello all,

I just joined the tribe, so please excuse me
if this had been posted before.

What flavor of Linux do you use and why?

I am hooked on Gentoo.
emerge is great for checking dependencies
and it runs real fast on my laptop.
But the biggest pro is the online discussion boards.
I find the Gentoo baords to be very helpful.

And yes, its still compiling...

I was about to post a question here asking whether folks had heard about Mono's take on C#/.Net becoming a useful career skill (interesting for me as I've worked in C# for over 4 years but really like Linux and the open source idea) and decided to look around on the net and see what was being said about it. Ran across this article:
http://ometer.com/desktop-language.html

I'm not too surprised that there could be IP issues with duplicating C# but I hadn't realized there were issues with having Java be ths standard as well. It also seems ike this guy is arguing for some open source Java implementation being the way to go.

Interesting...

Rebate for unused Windows licenses

I remember a big to-do a few years back when hordes of Linux fans began demanding rebates for Windows licenses they didn't use. Does anyone know if that's still an option?

I was thinking of getting a cheap Linux box and Dell has small systems for under $300. Saying "no OS, thank you" doesn't seem to be an option but I was wondering if returning the Windows Xp disks for a rebate was an option...

Thanks, G

I am a total idiot.

I dual boot to LInux and Windows, using GRUB. Today I booted up into Linux and reconfigured grub's menu.lst file so that Windows was the first item on the menu. This makes it the one that loads automatically if nothing is chosen.

Well I am also a total idiot and changed the menu file so that it waits zero seconds (instead of the default 10) for user input. So now, when I boot, GRUB waits 0 seconds for input, then loads the first item on the list, Windows. Because I can't boot into Linux, I can't configure GRUB.

I need some advice on either:

1. Booting Linux some other way so that I can configure the GRUB menu.lst file
2. Configurig GRUB some other way.

Please excuse my total idiocy as you advise me.

Not Linux, but open source:

I've been using Mambo to administer a site for the Lake Norman Jaycees, of which I'm a member.

www.lknjaycees.org

It's been going well so far... it took a while to get used to but I think I've gotten comfortable with it now. I just put in the random image thing on the right last night, even though we have only 2 pictures in it right now. (The club only has 18 members)

I'd be interested to hear other experiences with mambo...

GRUBbing for an answer.....

I have a question. I've just been installing FC5 (got if from the latest issue of Linux Pro magazine, so using the DVD image); everything runs fine, during the install, or so it seems. The packages install without a hitch and, once it gets to the end, the drive tray kicks out, it asks me to remove the media, and click to reboot the system.

Let me back up here, and point out that I'm installing this on an existing Window$ system. I've never been a big fan of RH, so I was just carving out a 10 GB space to check out the distro, on my secondary drive. FC5 doesn't give you a choice of bootloaders anymore; you get GRUB or nothing. At any rate, hda1 is my Windows drive, and the linux install went over on hdb1. I chose the parameters for the bootloader, at least those I was prompted for, and clicked to reboot after the install.

The computer goes RIGHT into windows. Do not pass go, do not collect so much as an offer to boot to my shiny new linux install. GRUB, like its insectal namesake, is completely silent during the boot process. Okay, so I went to bed on that one, and decided to try it again when my blood pressure was at less hydraulic levels. I boot into an 'upgrade' install off the FC5 install disk, and choose to update my bootloader options. I choose FC5 for my default boot this time, and make *sure* that I'm requesting grub to write to the MBR on hda1. I get an error message that no kernels packages were entered, and grub would not be installed.

Anybody have any suggestions? I've usually avoided doing dual-boot systems, but have had pretty good luck before with using lilo as the bootloader. FC5, however, doesn't seem to like lilo very much, and doesn't even give users the option to use it. Given the experience I've had with this install, I definitely don't want to make room for an install on my slackware system. I'm really just wanting to evaluate the distro, but it would be a lot easier to do so, if I were able to get it to actually boot.

Thanks in advance.

Installation Help: Fedora 5 Error Can't Find Kernel

I really need some help from the gurus. I can't get the install disk to even boot.

I'm trying to install Fedora Core 5 on my laptop. (Compaq Presario 3045us)

I put the DVD in and boot the machine. The prompt says "boot:" I press enter to start the graphical install, and get the following error message "could not find kernel image: linux". I have also tried every other option - typing linux text gives the same error. All of the function keys also give the same result.

I have checked the install disk and it passes the media check. I have also used this same disk to install Core 5 on a desktop machine, without any problems. Fedora Core 4 installs on the laptop just fine. But Core 5 is a vast improvement over 4 and I really want to get it working. So this is making no sense to me at all.

I also tried making a boot cd from the ISO image on the dvd, but this cd gives the exact same behavior as the dvd itself.

Any ideas what could be wrong, and how I can get past this error and get installed? Thanks.

fan control on my laptop

cross posted from the linux novice tribe:

I don't think my fan runs anymore. At least it used to come on all the time. I suspect it hasn't run since I installed suse and i just didn't notice because I only use it once or twice a week. I ran redhat when I first got it.

powersave doesn't recognize the fan at all:

> powersave -F
No fan devices available.

the lap top feels hot - this is what it says I'm at for temp but it feel hotter than this:

> powersave -T
Thermal Device no. 0:
Temperature: 50
Critical: 97

Seems like critical should be set a lot lower than 97? but if it doesn't find the fan it wouldn't do anything anyway.

any general or specific info on this would be appreciated. I'm not really familiar with how it's supposed to work.

I am setting up my small office (four people with XP machines) and am looking at various CRM sortware products. I am leaning toward ACT as I am most familier with it. My problem is the fact that it requires a lot of memory and my p to p wireless network can't handle it. Naturally I plan on changing to a client - server set up to solve that issue. I would like to run Debian on the server and use Samba (?)

My question is this: Can I keep the database on the server and access it from the Windows machines? ACT is a windows based program and works together with MS Office so I'm not sure how it will work. I've only played around with Linux as a hobby off and on for about five years and Debian since the release of Sarge so I'm not much more than a newby.

Alternatively, are there any good open source CRM solutions out there? We are a commercial financing and business consulting company that does a lot of different stuff so it has to be very flexible and easy to teach to employees.

I also posted this on the Debian Tribe 'cause enquiring minds want to know.

<500MB HD, <64BM RAM, 233Mhz Distro?

I recently aquired an old box someone was getting rid of and I'd like to make into a machine that we can use for web surfing and other non mission-critical work. It would also be useful for guests when they come over. That way I can spread the love.

It came with no hard drive, and so far the ones I've tried out of my old stash are less than 500MB. I'm pretty sure that the rest of the ones in my stash are less than 2GB. It has 64MB of ram and a 233Mhz Pentium.

What distro of linux/unix would be best for this box? Ideally it would have a look and feel as close as possible to Windows (for those guests!!) I tried Ubuntu -- can't do it cause it needs 2GB HD. I have a copy of DSL on CD but it loads incredibly slowly. I used to have a copy of RedHat 7.2 but I can't find all the disks for it. I think that it needs more than 2GB also, if I remember correctly.

Oh -- and this is a zero budget project. If it doesn't work it's no big deal.

Other fun stuff>> It has a riser card for the expansion slots, with 3 ISA and 2 PCI slots. The PCI slots are already full -- I supplied the Netgear FA311 and an old video card I had laying around.

Font suggestions? browsing Tribe on Firefox for Linux.

Since the latest release, it's been a known issue at Tribe that the certain sizes of the font used for creating and viewing tribe posts have caused certain characters to look larger than others in Firefox 1.0.7 (and possibly others) on Linux.

As the UI designer of Tribe, Elliot is working on his new package for making Tribe easier to read and interact with, he's asked me and another Tribe employee who use Firefox on Linux as our primary web browsers what font should be used for Linux users. I don't know much about it myself, but he found Bitstream Vera, which seems to come with most Linux distributions these days.

What do you think of the idea of using Bitstream Vera? Did it come with your distribution?

Here's an example of the font:
http://www.bitstream.com/font_rendering/products/dev_fonts/vera.html

I just got Ubuntu and am really liking it but i'm still a novice when it comes to Linux. I've messed with Knoppix and the like a bit over the years but Ubuntu has really peaked my interest...

I was hoping that someone here might be able to suggest a book for me to learn with...?

Since it's based on Debian, should i get a Debian book or just "Linux for Dummies"? Or maybe something else perhaps?

Thanks... Mike

Simply Mepis News

From http://www.mepis.org/node/8354 it's interesting to note that they specifically mention Ubuntu as giving Debian a run for its money. Ubuntu is of course based on Debian. :) Oh and Happy B'day Mepis!

MEPIS Birthday Release of SimplyMEPIS 3.4-1rc1
Submitted by warren on Mon, 11/21/2005 - 14:06. ISOs

Morgantown, WV, November 21, 2005: Yes, it's the third birthday of the MEPIS Project and SimplyMEPIS 3.4-1 rc1 is available in the testing subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. For up to 15 days, please send feedback to dev@mepis.org

SimplyMEPIS 3.4-1 is expected to be final in one to two weeks. No kidding! What happened to 3.3.2 and 3.3.3? Warren tells us, "Every time we were ready to upload a build, yet another updated app made it into the Etch pool." "First we finished the kernels for the DCCA and we ready to go, then Xorg tested as OK for the first time, then OOo 2.0 became available, then KDE 3.4.2 entered Etch, then OOo 2.0 updated in Sid and we discovered that some real shortcomings were fixed and we needed to use that version, then we found that mplayer and the mplayerplug-in had both updated to greatly improve multimedia support." "For a while there, it seemed like it would never end." "So this release will last for a while, we decided to pull in Firefox 1.5 from experimental. When Ff 1.5 goes final, SM 3.4-1 will also go final."

Warren continues "Obviously Linux development is proceding at a very fast pace and the Debian Team has responded to the threat from Ubuntu by doing a great job of rolling out the new stuff right away." "But this means new challenges for MEPIS because we are committed to being as Debian compatible as possible. In the past we could use the testing pool and know it would remain relatively stable for several months at a time. Those days are gone, and while it means a lot more work for us to maintain a distro from such a moving target, it also means that we can pin on Etch for stability and still include most of the latest and greatest software releases."

Some of the applications included in SimplyMEPIS 3.4-1 are Xorg 6.8.2, KDE 3.4.2, OpenOffice 2.0, Firefox 1.5, Thunderbird 1.0.7, and Skype 1.2.0.18. The latest MEPIS kernel is the DCC version of 2.6.12-10 which has enhanced builtin hardware support. Please note that MEPIS no longer supports Win4Lin 98 which required a patched kernel that was incompatible with Kernel Team guidelines. Win4lin users should consider upgrading to Win4lin Pro which does not not require a kernel patch.

The MEPIS pool contains the SimplyMEPIS packages that deviated from the Debian Etch pool as of the freeze date of 11-15-2005. This includes the 2.6.12 SMP kernels and third party apps packaged by MEPIS, but not Debian, for example AcrobatReader. Users of earlier versions of SimplyMEPIS can get help with updating to the latest version by contacting the great people at the MEPIS forums at mepis.org and mepislovers.com.

For more information about MEPIS and SimplyMEPIS, please contact:
This year participants will have the opportunity to express the individual’s role within larger systems, be they political, social or corporate, through their own unique and personalized modifications to off-the-shelf products. Modification possibilities may range from personal computers to clothing; from podcasts to public space; from video games and cell phones to cars or dwellings. The do-it-yourself aspect of this year’s digifest means that the range of modifications is endless, with creativity leading the way in unconventional expression.

Each year 8-12 winners of the juried digifest New Voices call are invited to Toronto, Canada to showcase their work at one of digifest’s high-profile venues, which include Harbourfront Centre, Ontario Science Centre and Design Exchange. In 2006 we will showcase the most innovative transitions in product design from “modern” to “modification.” Work by selected presenters will be installed or displayed. Get your submission in today!

how to move from programmer/power user to Sys Admin

Hello,

++ cross posted in System Administrators tribe and Net Engineers & SysAdmins, but no replies there yet and this list seems a little more active ++

Prior to my current position, I was a web application programmer; I wrote lots of code, built database systems and been a power user (or default sysadmin) on both windows and UNIX systems. I did not study any of this in school, all my knowledge has been built through "figuring it out", usually out of necessity.

Currently I am in a job, where I am a Unix and Linux Sys Admin, and been here for about a year now. I am one of three in our group, the newest and most junior member for sure. We work in a 30+ server mixed environment using Debian, Red Hat and Trustix Linux, HPUX and TRU64. Over the past year, I have picked up a few things from my supervisor, but haven't had a chance to get any training other than OTJ, and even that seems a bit minimal looking back at the past year. I feel like I have a LONG way to go before I get to the point of feeling that I can bring a server up on my own, harden it, and have it run just what it needs too, securely, even though I just went an exercise in this exact vein. I also feel like there is just so much more that I need to know to be a fully competent UNIX or Linux System Admin, especially after trying to complete the system admin quiz (subject: "quiz") posted in the System Administrators tribe.

Part of the problem I think is that all of our current servers are expected to be fully fictional, so we as a group don't have anything for me to 'play with', so I brought in an old desktop from home but the poor old thing is so old that I could only install debian on it, Red Hat Enterprise Server just would not work on the old 'puter.

I have read, and re-read the Evi Nemeths UNIX System Admin Handbook (well, most of it has been read, some parts that were not pertinent to my environment were skipped). I have also spent tons of time just looking around the net, googling, reading forums, but I think I need problems to solve, for me personally, to learn how to solve the problem. But until the problems happens, there is no place for me to "play". And when something at work breaks, usually it needs to be fixed a minute ago, so the other two more advanced admins do the fixing. I need to learn, but my OTJ is not quite what I would like, and I am left trying to figure out how to learn.

I am a power user with root privileges, but not fully understanding the power I hold. Suggestions for how to help me become a better educated admin??

Joyce

Microsoft CEO loses it

I thought this was funny.

---

Ex-staffer tells how CEO lost it
Move to Google said to upset Ballmer

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer vowed to "kill Google" in an obscenity-laced tirade during which he threw a chair across his office, hitting a table, according to court documents made public Friday.

The episode, detailed by Mark Lucovsky, a former Microsoft employee, came to light as part of a court battle between Microsoft and its rival Google, the Mountain View search engine. In a statement Friday, Microsoft characterized Lucovsky's comments as a "gross exaggeration."

Microsoft has sued Google over the hiring of Kai-Fu Lee. The giant software firm says the former Microsoft employee violated his employment contract by joining a competitor. Google claims that Lee's duties are not related to those in his previous job and that the suit therefore is without merit.

But the case, already heated, reached a new level Friday, with new allegations about Ballmer, who is among the world's most powerful business leaders. The account, based on a meeting in 2004, casts the executive as holding a deep hatred for Google, which has so far foiled Microsoft's attempts to dominate the Internet search industry.

Lucovsky, whose title at Microsoft was "distinguished engineer," recounts that Ballmer erupted violently after Lucovsky told him he was resigning to join Google. He threw the chair across the office and then launched into profanity.

At one point, Ballmer said of Google's chief executive, Eric Schmidt, that he would "bury that guy -- I have done it before, and I will do it again," according to the filing. The remarks apparently refer to Schmidt's previous stints as an executive at Sun Microsystems and Novell, two Microsoft competitors.

Ballmer added "I'm going to f -- ing kill Google," the court documents said.

In a statement, Steve Ballmer, said: "Mark Lucovsky's account of our conversation last November is a gross exaggeration of what actually took place. Mark's decision to leave was disappointing, and I urged him strongly to change his mind. But his characterization of that meeting is not accurate."

Ballmer eventually regained his composure, according to the filing, and tried to persuade Lucovsky to stay. Among other things during the meeting and in subsequent phone calls, Ballmer said: "Google is not a real company. It's a house of cards," the filing said.

In a statement, Nicole Wong, a Google attorney, said: "Microsoft is trying to stop employees from coming to Google. That's what this case is about. The Lucovsky declaration shows a pattern of behavior that supports this."

Elsewhere in the filings, Microsoft tried to persuade a King County, Wash. , Superior Court judge to prohibit Lee from doing work for Google similar to his role at Microsoft. To bolster its argument, Microsoft said it had e-mails showing that Lee intended to violate his employment contract.

Microsoft said that Lee, while still a Microsoft employee, wrote to Google's Schmidt to solicit a job, describing his duties as "Corporate VP at Microsoft, working on areas very related to Google." In addition, it said that Lee sent to Google a document he prepared for Steve Ballmer titled "Making it in China" after removing the "Microsoft Confidential" label and making minor edits, including deleting a chapter.

Redhat Fedora Core 4 - Network

I installed Core 4 onto a dell laptop with a D-Link wireless. I used ndiswrapper to get the wireless working and all seemed to go well.

From a command line I can ping outside of my network, I can use lynx to surf so I figure all is well. When I log into Gnome I can not go to anyplace BUT redhat.com

I have check security settings and just simply disabled firewall and SELinux. Nothing.

Any suggestions?
Looking for User-mode Linux / Virtual Machine hosts

Hey gang,

And I've discovered that a typical 300 watt server costs $30 a month in electricity (672 hours a month * 300 watts * 0.15 = $30!)

So I decided on another approach--- an ISP that affords a ton of control to the customers.

Ideally, I'm looking for something more then ye' olde PHP/MySQL host. I'm looking for a Virtual Machine/User-Mode Linux type of host; where the customer is given near-total control over a host.

If you haven't heard of, User Mode Linux, it's essentially a Virtual Machine. An ISP can assign one VM to each customer, and each VM looks and feels like a a full-fledged Linux installation.

http://www.linode.com/ is one such host.

Anyone know of any others?

I don't need a ton of bandwidth or a fast processor... mostly I'm just looking for control.

After a few years work on programming language
compilers, decompilers and translators, I finally
launched an alpha version of a website for developers
to find code snippets easily. It contains over 100M
loc of c/c++ code. The search is syntax aware, so you
can easily find method calls and class definitions,
etc. I'd like to hear some feedback.

Our web site is at http://www.codase.com.

so - i love the feature set of gnome-terminal. what i don't like is that fact that scrolling uses up 90% of my cpu. it's memory usage is pretty out there too. it bugged me for some time, but i've put up wth it because of the features.

now i've found mrxvt - http://materm.sourceforge.net/ it has multiple shell tabs, is very configurable, and supports all of the keyboard shortcuts of both kterm and gterm. (and <pgup> <pdown> keys passed to your favorite editor, as opposed to using them for it's own scroll buffer ;) just thought i'd share for folks that have frustrations along these lines.

Where do I want to go today?

Out of reach of Mr Gates forever.

Today I am going to install Linux on my machine and whatever happens, I am going to perservere through all hurdles so that I never have to use M$ products again. Well, until I make music that is as all my applications are windows based, for the time being.

I have used Linux before, I am quite comfortable with CLI/shell but I wouldnt say that I know off by heart all my shell commands. I have been using Cygwin & Putty [SSH telnet app] lately but have used Linux off and on opver the last 3-4 years.

I have been prompted to make the switch permanently for my general & web dev usage as the other day, windows crashed leaving that partition in a state of thinking it was not formatted, whilst near completion on a webdev job that is at critical phase [and consequently pushed it back about a week].

What I want to ask all you good folks here is which distro would you recommend?

I have experience with RedHat from 7 upto 9 then Fedora 1,2 & 3. I have obtained the install disks for:

Ubuntu
Fedora 4
Debian 3.1
Gentoo

I am inclined to use Fedora as I am familair with it but reading about the new security enviroment with a LAMP setup, has slightly puty me off. I dont want to spend hours config'ing SE just to do webdev on a local machine, which will not be accessible to the outside world.

I like the sound of Ubuntu from what I have read and the apt-get sounds like it will be easy to use. I am drawn as it is a solid Debian based distro with seemingly good, friendly support.

I'm not sure about the Debian distro as everytime in the past I have tried to install, it refused to. Maybe it was my inadequacy and inexperience but thats never a good sign.

I dont think I also have the possible 36 hours to sit and wait for Gentoo to compile but I must say that in the future I may well go this route. In fact, I'm trying to sort out an older box to run it on so I too may taste the supposed Ambrosia of Linux distro's ;)

Can anyone offer any advice or a preferred distro over any of these? Maybe someone can alay my fears about the whole SE situation with Fedora and show it to be something that would be advantageous to get to know.

I thank you greatly in advance for any advice and pointers you can offer.

I am currently accessing tribe.net from "DSL" (Damn Small Linux) which easily fits on a bootable CD and creates a ramdisk from which it runs. So it doesn't touch my existing OS.

I know only a little about Linux but I've been able to get around in this pretty well.. set up the network settings so that I can access the internet, change video settings, etc. I can't seem to find a video setting that looks good. It seems for all of them, the scan speed is too slow.

I run two work stations on Windows 98SE... I REFUSE to switch to Windows XP. I run them behind a linux firewall built with the help of the folks at http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/ .... so I know enough about linux to get that going. I've found that the combination of Windows 98SE and Linux seem to make me immune to most viruses.

The problem comes when Win 98 is no longer useful, and I have to get something new. I'm hoping to learn enough about Linux between now and then that I can go download Redhat or some other free version and kiss goodbye to MS alltogether...

Top 500 web sites

http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?ts_mode=global&lang=none

What is Traffic Rank?
The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site's current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.

You can also get graphs of the traffic history any top 100,000 site.

Linux World Expo -San Francisco or Novell Expo SF?

I'll start off saying that I haven't attended any of the San Francisco LinuxWorld Expos in the last three years because of time and money constraints... But this year an acquaintance of mine had a booth at the Expo and she gave me free exhibition tickets and passes to get into the lesson sessions for free.

So a bit excited that I wasn't laying out $1200 I jumped on the BART train and went into the city...

I have to say that I am less than impressed with what I saw. The last time I went, Linus Torvald came out and talked to us personally. Their were, atleast it felt like, three times as many companys and booths in the Exhibit hall... All giving out great tchoski's to get you to listen to their presentations and tossing out free shirts left and right.

This year they moved it to the new Annex at the Mosconne Center, but the entire event shadowed in comparison to the previous events I had seen. Before there were representatives from hundreds of companys trying to tell you about the great things they are doing and why you should use their product... Now almost a third, and maybe more, of the booths were flogging Novell. They had Novell logo's and all talked about how their product ties into Novells linux offerings. Even the Adobe booth had a Novell speaker in a Novell shirt doing demonstrations when we walked by...

The whole event effectively became a Novell expo. There were fewer vendors than previous years, and the big power houses took up large ammounts of relastated... Novell had booths everywhere you looked or atleast had a large group of vendors flogging their logo for them.

And gone are the days of listening to a marketting person for 30 seconds and getting a shirt or what not. Few of the booths had any shirts to give out. And those that did required you to walk around between 4 to 8 other booths to get stamps to come back and pick up your shirt. Even to enter the drawings for prizes you had to have a card stamped by 6 or more other booths.

What a waste of what was once a good source of new information...

I recently installed with a Pink Tie/Red Hat distro and later decided to build and try my own kernel. I built it and copied it to boot but then started thinking about the kernel modules...that if I build them and use "make" to put them in place there won't be a way to go back to the old version.

Or am I looking at this wrong?

I just read how you can put F-Prot on some versions of live Linux Dostro's but not all, i lost my copy of Knoppix 3.4 and the instructions i read do not apply to 3.9... So, can anyone tell me how to apply F-Prot to another live distro or name one that already comes with an antivirus program...?

The idea here is i'm trying to get a tool that will let me virus scan a windows machine without having to boot from Windows... I work on my friends computers a lot and this would prolly help me...

Just to save anyone else from the agony that I've just experienced, there seems to be a problem using Fedora Core 4 and j2sdk 1.4.2. I installed Fedora Core 4 on my laptop, and when attempting to install a local copy of our application using j2sdk 1.4.2, I encountered this error:

MESSAGE: java.net.SocketException: Invalid argument or cannot assign requested address

Since this log message appeared while tomcat was trying to connect to the database, and I'm a DBA, I assumed that it was my newly installed database, but a google search revealed that you must install jdk5.0 for Fedora Core 4:

It seemed like SCO/Caldera was in trouble when the judge said:

"Viewed against the backdrop of SCO's plethora of public statements concerning IBM's and others' infringement of SCO's purported copyrights to the Unix software, it is astonishing that SCO has not offered any competent evidence to create a disputed fact regarding whether IBM has infringed SCO's alleged copyrights through IBM's Linux activities."

Now we have yet another reason to believe the judge. The following email was sent to Darl McBride within a few weeks of his arrival at SCO/Caldera, well before SCO/Caldera made any claims about Unix IP in Linux. It raises huge questions about whether SCO/Caldera ever believed their own story, or if the whole thing was 100% bad faith and fraud.
--------------
Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2002 13:26:51 -0700
From: Michael Davidson
Organization: Caldera International
X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.6 [en] (Win98; I)
X-Accept-Language: en
To: Reg Broughton
Subject: Re: Patents and IP Investigation

The actual investigation itself was done by an outside consultant (Bob Swartz) hired by SCO. I worked with him and reviewed his findings.

My recollection is that Bob produced an initial proposal for the project which outlined the methodology to be used, and he *may* have also provided a final report, but I don't have copies of either.

The project was a result of SCO's executive management refusing to believe that it was possible for Linux and much of the GNU software to have come into existance without *someone* *somewhere* having copied pieces of proprietary UNIX source code to which SCO owned the copyright. The hope was that we would find a "smoking gun" somwhere in code that was being used by Red Hat and/or the other Linux companies that would give us some leverage. (There was, at one stage, the idea that we would sell licenses to corporate customers who were using Linux as a kind of "insurance policy" in case it turned out that they were using code which infringed our copyright).

Note that the scope of the project was limited to looking for evidence of copyright infringement (we didn't consider patents because SCO didn't own the rights to any patents, and more general IP issues were just too vague - besides SCO was *sure* that it was going to find evidence of copyright violations which are comparatively straightforward to prove once you have found them)

An outside consultant was brought in bacause I had alrady voiced the opinion (based on very detailed knowledge of our own source code and a reasonably broad exposure to Linux and other open source projects) that it was a waste of time and that we were not going to find anything.

Bob worked on the project for (I think) 4 to 6 months during which time he looked at the Linux kernel, and a large number of libraries and utilities and compared them with several different vesrions of AT&T UNIX source code. (Most of this work was automated using tools which were designed to to fuzzy matching and ignore trivial differences in formatting and spelling)

At the end, we had found absolutely *nothing*. ie no evidence of any copyright infringement whatsoever.

There is, indeed, a lot of code that is common between UNIX and Linux (all of the X Windows system, for example) but invariably it turned out that the common code was something that both we (SCO) and the Linux community had obtained (legitimately) from some third party.

Hey yall.

I've been a member of this Tribe for quite awhile and have gotten tons of good info. Now I have a question.

I have been goofing around with Linux for about five years and have installed and used several distros. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as most of you (sucking-up), in fact all I've done is a few basic tutorials online. I would like to develope the skills and credentials to be able to install and administer network systems professionally.

What training system and certification do think is best? I can devote 10 to 20 hours a week, but it has to be some sort of home study program. I want it to be distro neutral so I don't think Red Hat's system would be appropriate. I could be wrong.

For my job, i frequently have to make failover-solutions between 2 servers. Most often only for the following services: apache, sendmail/qmail, mysql/postgres, vnc

For the moment i use heartbeat and mon to do it though i found some other programs which essentially do the same. BalanceNG comes to mind.
I picked something up that IBM has good clustering/failover solutions but don't seem to find anything useful browsing their site.

Does anyone else have experience with failover, and what tools did you use to get the job done?

From time to time I'll make a few attempts to guess the password. I've also considered just doing a dictionary attack, however, the output is over 1 Gb so that might take years.
I have noticed that in the intermediate step, before a password error is reported, there is a large file generated on the disk. Once the wrong password is entered, that temporary file vanishes. I am wondering if there is a way to capture that output? I was sort od thinking of something like:
dd if='rar -e mympg.mpg' of=/tmp/
Of course that won't work but it's the sort of thing I am looking for - just write the output stream to the disk as it is generated. I don't even know what that output stream is but I'd like to see.
This may not be do-able but it keeps me occupied and out of trouble looking for the solution.
Any ideas?

On a site I worked for, I would log in with my regular username, but when I would create or modify files, they would be set to user: apache, group: apache. This worked this way regardless of how I created or modified files (whether in VI or in the terminal window). Anyone know how to achieve this? Thanks!!!

Which ISP do you recommend

I've been using my old Pac*bell DSL for years now. I have a fixed IP number but I don't really use it. I get about 34 Kb (kilobytes) upstream and about 160 Kb down. I pay $50 a month for the service. I live in San Francisco. I already have satellite TV so I'm not able to switch to the Comcast cable + broadband discounted solution.

Can anyone recommend a better company or plan for my Internet for about same price or cheaper? What ISP/plan do you use at home?

Thanks!

So i tried burning "Austrumi" to a 50mb, mini disc and it wouldn't even boot... Possible that the disc was scratched... Then i burned "Damn Small Linux" and it did boot but as a rookie, i couldn't even access the hard disc or get Firefox online... I tried the PPPOE as it suggested but got nowhere... I have had much better luck with Knoppix and Kanotix in the past...

So, anyone have any suggestions on a full proof, 50mb Linux Live Distro...?

Thanks
