Well, to start with, PC hardware is really cheap sometimes to the point of being free. Theres also the basic diffrence between the Mac way of doing things (which is basicly that Apple knows best, and its best not to trouble users with to many options) and the Linux way of doing things (which is to assume the user is a freaking genius, so give them some reasonable defaults, some instructions, and let them do anything they want even if it may even destroy there equipment). Of course, if you are a freaking genius, this means Linux totaly rocks for you.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It is very much the same reason I have chosen Slackware for my Linux distro. It makes no assumptions and lets you do whatever for yourself. It's one step away from Gentoo (a distro in which you compile everything from scratch).

I actually use both. This is partly because of my job, but here at home too I have both a Mac and a Linux desktop. More and more, I've actually been using the Mac as my primary machine, but both see a lot of use every day.

I prefer the Mac GUI to anything available on Linux, though obviously not everyone will feel the same way. When it comes to diving in and dealing with anything more technical, which is very frequent for me, I prefer Linux by a long shot (it's worth mentioning that I couldn't stand Mac before OS X, mostly for this reason).

On comparable (hardly top of the line) hardware, the Mac was more expensive and tends to feel more responsive, but realistically the Linux box is much more of a workhorse.

In terms of available software, the Mac does have a slight edge, as more and more Linux apps will compile and run natively on Mac these days.

I agree with what was said above, if you're looking to settle on one or the other. It really does depend on what kind of computing experience you're after.

I use both as well. I run Suse on my desktop at home and have an ibook for the road that I absolutely love. I do a great deal of database programming for websites and use both systems for this purpose. I've set up a development environment on both boxes (apache, mysql, php, etc.) and both work great for this purpose. However, I'd have to say that I prefer to use linux for general work needs such as programming. I guess this is only because I've gotten used to how to do thing in linux and I'm able to get work done faster. For office applications though I prefer to use my ibook. Yes, I know that openoffice is great, as is abiword and gnumeric etc. but OfficeX on my mac is just much more seamless and easier to work with (IMHO). I've also started to use cxoffice (www.codeweavers.com/) on Suse with great success. However, the programs are a little sluggish on my 1GHz Athlon so for now I still continue to use my mac for office applications.

If you're doing general MS Office work a lot a mac might be better for you (but be sure to check out cxoffice!).

How does Mozilla perform on a Mac? I'm curious because the performance on Windows is very good, but the performance on Linux sucks rocks.

It's definitely a bit snappier on Mac than Linux (though I couldn't possibly tell you why). In my experience it performs as well as anything else available on the Mac these days.

I've had good experience with Firebird and Galeon in linux. I haven't tried Mozilla Navigator, but I know Netscape Navigator always ran really bad in linux for some reason. I had no problems at all with Galeon, but I did have a slight memory leak issue with the latest Firebird. The memory leak isn't much of a problem, just have to restart Firebird every couple days or so. I tried useing mozilla on a mac in a school lab a few months ago, but I switched to a PC because the mac was running really bad (not sure if it was the version of mozilla, or something wierd they had done to the mac).

I wouldn't say Netscrape Nervgrater always performed bad under Linux. Under Mandrake 7.0, it was very snappy on about a 200MHz machine. However, it was what is now an old version, and lacks many features that are nigh unto mandatory for modern web browsing, and the newer versions that have it, slog.

It is hard to install Netscape 0.92 on EEEPC but I enjoyed Netscapoe 3 Gold on SGI, best browser. Netscape 1.1 is cool for USENeT.

Sorry for the double-post, but I just had another thought.

Has anyone run Mozilla under BSD? If so, how does the performance compare to Win/Lin/Mac?

Ten years ago I was on SGI Indy, now I am told that my EEEPC has the sae power and it shows. UNIX means control and also fun. But isn't Mac UNIX anyway???

It takes some practice to integrate. woz plays wozcaster but you might prefer Rickenbacker, who knows?

Linux will run Mac. The EEEPC e.g. runs Mac Tiger/Leopard, Solaris, IRIX, Wine, DOSbox and the unthinkable. Try and crush it! It plays almost NexT Step!
